Greek-Australian artist Stella Greig launches solo exhibition

16 April, 2025

“I AM ONLY AN OCEAN AWAY”

Stella Greig invites viewers on an intimate journey across Oceans – bodies of water that both separate and connect our shared humanity.  Through this deeply personal collection, Greig transforms geographical distance into emotional landscapes, exploring the complex territories of longing, memory, and resilience.

Each work serves as a visual translation of the artist’s emotional reality, capturing moments where absence becomes presence and separation transforms into connection.  Greig’s distinctive artistic language speaks to universal experiences of distance and proximity, reminding us that even when divided by vast waters, our emotional ties remain unbroken, suspended in that delicate space where “I am only an ocean away.”

I Am Only an Ocean Away launches May 2 – May 18 at Studio59 Artspace – 59A McDonald Street, Mordialloc

About Stella Greig:

Stella Greig is a contemporary Artist whose practice is anchored in drawing, combined with a dynamic approach to paint application that pushes the boundaries of traditional technique.  Working with both oils and acrylics, she creates powerful works that emerge from a physical dialogue between artist and medium, whether working on the floor or with canvases stretched against the wall.  Drawing serves as the cornerstone of Greig’s artistic process, providing the vocabulary for her exploration of place and memory.  From these gestural beginnings, she develops pieces through an intensely physical engagement with paint, allowing the medium’s natural fluidity to interact with her deliberate manipulations.  Her distinctive method of working – alternating between floor and wall – creates opportunities for paint to move and merge in ways that capture both the essence of remembered landscapes and the spontaneous energy of the moment.

A graduate of RMIT University with a BA in Fine Arts, Greig has established herself as a significant voice in contemporary abstract painting.  Her works, held in private collections both in Australia and internationally, reflect her deep connection to place and her ability to capture the essential spirit of landscapes through abstraction.  Through her masterful handling of both oil and acrylic mediums, she creates paintings that resonate with energetic frequency while maintaining a profound sense of place and memory.
