Greek-Australian rising star Blake Thredgold joins the AFL

26 November, 2025

A new chapter is unfolding for Greek-Australian footy fans, as 18-year-old defender Blake Thredgold has been drafted by North Melbourne Football Club with pick No. 26 in the 2025 AFL Draft — a proud moment for both him and the Hellenic-Australian community.

Tall defender with real promise

Standing at 194 cm, Thredgold emerged from Sturt Football Club in South Australia. Despite a broken hand earlier in the season, he returned in spectacular form, starring in Sturt’s SANFL under-18 Grand Final win, where his 12 marks and 14 disposals earned him best-on-ground honours.

Known for his athleticism, leap and intercept skills, he impressed at the national Draft Combine — ranking among the top 10 for his speed and vertical jump. Scouts praised his combination of aerial power and agility, making him an ideal key defender for the fast-paced modern game.

Thredgold said being drafted felt “surreal” and “the best feeling ever,” expressing excitement to join North Melbourne and gratitude for the support from his friends and family.

Heritage and hope — A new Greek-Australian face in the AFL

What makes this moment particularly meaningful is Thredgold’s Greek heritage — his maternal grandparents hail from the island of Lesvos, and he embraces his roots with pride.

He now joins a long line of Greek-Australian talent in Australian Rules Football. From Anthony Koutoufides to Peter Daicos, Greek names have been part of the sport’s rich history, and Thredgold now carries that legacy forward.

Supporters of Greek heritage say he embodies the same resilience and determination that have long defined the Greek-Australian spirit. His former coach noted that Thredgold overcame adversity throughout the season, proving his maturity and discipline at a young age.

What lies ahead

With his blend of physical strength, agility and composure, Thredgold is seen as a potential long-term key defender for North Melbourne. The club described him as “athletic” and a welcome boost to their defensive structure.

As he begins pre-season training, Greek communities across Melbourne — particularly in Oakleigh, Northcote and Brunswick — have expressed pride and excitement. Thredgold himself has said he’s looking forward to settling into life in Victoria and connecting with Melbourne’s vibrant Greek community.

For many, his journey represents more than just athletic potential — it symbolises the enduring bond between Hellenism and Australian sport, and the power of the next generation of Greek-Australians to reach the highest levels while honouring their heritage.
