Ioannis Loverdos: “Melbourne Guards the Thermopylae of Hellenism”

16 October, 2025

Deputy Foreign Minister Ioannis Loverdos, responsible for Hellenes Abroad, expressed his deep admiration and emotion for the achievements and enduring contribution of the Greek community in Australia, particularly in Melbourne.

During his visit to the Hellenic Museum and the premises of 3XY Radio Hellas and our newspaper TA NEA, Mr Loverdos praised the determination and unity of Greek Australians, noting that “the spirit of Hellenism remains alive thanks to their unwavering commitment.”

The Deputy Minister is on a two-day tour of Melbourne, meeting with Greek-Australian ministers, MPs, and community leaders. Earlier in the day, he visited the Victorian Parliament where he met with former Liberal Party leader Matthew Guy, who publicly welcomed their discussion.

In an exclusive interview with 3XY Radio Hellas, Mr Loverdos urged members of the Greek diaspora to stay informed about citizenship matters, register for participation in Greece’s national elections, and remain active guardians of Greek heritage. He also apologised for the long absence of similar high-level government visits to Melbourne.

An open public forum will take place this evening at 7 p.m. at the Greek Community of Melbourne, hosted by Consul General Dimitra Georgantzioglou and featuring Interior Ministry Secretaries-General Mr Balerba and Mr Karnavos. The event will provide detailed information on registry and citizenship procedures and invite community input on improving services.

Mr Loverdos’ visit concludes tomorrow with a wreath-laying at the Hellenic-Australian Memorial, visits to Oakleigh Grammar and the Holy Monastery of Chora, and a press conference at the Consulate General.
