Israel strikes Iran’s nuclear and military sites

13 June, 2025

Israel has launched a large-scale military operation targeting multiple military and nuclear sites across Iran. Israel strikes Iran’s nuclear and military sites in an attack in what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described as just the beginning of a wider campaign.

“Dozens of Israeli Air Force fighter jets completed the first phase, which included strikes against military targets, including nuclear infrastructure, in various parts of Iran,” said a statement from the Israeli army’s General Staff.

Netanyahu confirmed that the offensive focused on crippling Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities. “We have struck at the heart of Iran’s enrichment programme. We have struck at the heart of its military nuclear capabilities and targeted its main enrichment facility in Natanz,” he declared. He further warned that the operation will continue “for as many days as necessary to eliminate this threat.”

Explosions Rock Iran – Reports of High Casualties

Iranian media reported powerful explosions in Tehran and other locations, with significant – though still unconfirmed, casualties, including senior military officers and civilians, many of whom were reportedly children. Flights to and from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport have been suspended.

Iran Retaliates With Drone and Missile Attacks

In response to the Israeli assault, Iran launched a wave of over 100 drones and missiles towards Israeli territory. Sirens sounded across central and northern Israel as air defence systems intercepted multiple incoming threats. Iran has vowed further retaliation, declaring that it will respond “at a time and place of its choosing.”

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant placed the country on high alert and declared a state of emergency nationwide, warning that Iran’s response may be far broader and more devastating than in previous escalations.

Israel’s airspace has been shut down until further notice, according to the Ministry of Transport.

Global Concerns and US Response

The United States has expressed deep concern over the rapidly escalating conflict. CNN reported that President Donald Trump convened an emergency cabinet meeting in Washington. While acknowledging that an Israeli strike was “very likely,” he reiterated his hope for a peaceful resolution.

US military forces in the region have been placed on high alert, with contingency plans in place for the potential evacuation of American citizens, a senior US official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

Diplomatic efforts had been underway for renewed indirect nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran in Oman, scheduled for Sunday. However, the talks are now in doubt following the dramatic deterioration in relations and direct hostilities.
