Israel urges US to resume strikes on Houthis after attacks on Greek-operated ships

11 July, 2025

Tensions in the Red Sea are rising rapidly as Israel formally requested the United States resume military strikes on Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, following a deadly escalation that saw two Greek-operated ships sunk.

The request came during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington this week, as part of broader talks on regional security.

According to Israeli broadcaster Kan, the vessels Magic Seas and Eternity C, both flying the Liberian flag but managed by Greek shipping companies, were targeted by Houthi missile attacks on Sunday and Monday. These attacks mark a new and dangerous escalation in maritime hostilities.

The Houthis, backed by Iran, claim their attacks are acts of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Since November 2023, they have launched over 100 attacks on vessels in the Red Sea.

In response, the Israeli military launched airstrikes on port infrastructure in Hodeidah and other Houthi-held areas. Now, Tel Aviv is pushing for broader international involvement, including renewed U.S. military strikes or the formation of a multinational coalition to deter further aggression.

An anonymous Israeli official stressed that “this is no longer just Israel’s problem,” urging Washington to send a clear signal that the Houthis are facing serious consequences.

The U.S. had previously conducted airstrikes against the Houthis from March to May 2024, before halting operations as part of a temporary ceasefire agreement. However, the recent attacks could prompt a reassessment of that strategy.

This comes at a time of heightened concern for global shipping and energy security, especially for countries like Greece with heavy commercial interests in the region. A coordinated international response may now be essential to restore order in the vital Red Sea corridor.
