Karystianou draws red lines on Greek–Turkish talks that challenge power, narrative and sovereignty

28 January, 2026

Maria Karystianou has made her first substantive intervention in foreign policy, choosing to address the highly sensitive issue of Greek–Turkish relations at a politically charged moment, as preparations reportedly intensify for the launch of her own political movement. Karystianou draws red lines on Greek–Turkish talks that challenge power, narrative and sovereignty.

Her public stance places Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis under direct pressure ahead of his forthcoming meeting with Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with Karystianou demanding full transparency over both the agenda and the purpose of the talks.

Demands for disclosure — and doubts over the meeting itself

In a post on the platform X, Karystianou argued that Greek citizens have the right to know exactly what issues are officially on the table, so they can judge whether such a meeting is justified at all. She went further, openly questioning the necessity of holding the talks under current conditions.

Her intervention was triggered by recent remarks from Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who stated that Greece and Turkey should not leave the negotiating table until “problems are resolved”. Karystianou interpreted this language as revisionist in nature, warning that it risks framing long-standing Turkish claims as unresolved “issues” open to negotiation, rather than matters governed by international law.

In that context, she warned that any retreat from Greece’s sovereign rights would amount to “national betrayal”, effectively setting red lines for the Prime Minister and raising the political cost of compromise.

Media framing and contested claims

Separately, commentary around Karystianou’s views on social issues has become a flashpoint, but supporters argue this is largely the result of misquotation and politically motivated framing by media outlets seen as aligned with the current government. They contend that statements attributed to her — including claims about abortion policy — have been selectively presented or taken out of context, creating a controversy that does not accurately reflect her position.

The dispute highlights a broader dynamic now surrounding her public presence: as her profile grows beyond the Tempi justice campaign and into national politics, the battle over narrative and credibility is intensifying, with rival camps seeking either to legitimise her as an independent voice or to undermine her before any formal political launch.

Backlash and polarisation

At the same time, Karystianou’s positions on social issues have already generated controversy. Her comments suggesting that abortion should be subject to broader public consultation sparked significant backlash, highlighting the polarising nature of her emerging political platform and the wide spectrum of reactions it provokes. Supporters see her as an independent voice challenging entrenched power structures, while critics accuse her of populism, nationalism or political overreach — a divide now extending into the realm of foreign policy.

A widening political footprint

By linking transparency in Greek– Turkish diplomacy with warnings of revisionism and “national betrayal”, Karystianou has deliberately raised the stakes. Her intervention underscores how debates over dialogue with Ankara, sovereignty and historical rights are becoming intertwined with broader questions of political legitimacy, trust and leadership.

Whether this marks the beginning of a sustained foreign policy agenda or a symbolic opening move, her stance has already ensured that Greek–Turkish relations — and the language used to describe them — will remain firmly at the centre of Greece’s evolving political debate.
