Maria Sakkari smashes her way through first round of Australian Open

22 January, 2020

Greece’s 24-year-old tennis ace Maria Sakkari smashed her way through the first round of the Australian Open beating Russia’s Margarita Gasparyan 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour.

Sakkari established herself as one of the WTA’s most consistent performers last season and showed her dominance on court today with her powerful serve and forehand.

The match was postponed from yesterday, due to bad weather, and with the large Greek community in Melbourne behind her, Sakkari came out firing, comfortably advancing through to the second round.
