Meet the winners of the Hellenic Museum’s inaugural Golden Fleece Competition

23 October, 2025

The Hellenic Museum’s inaugural Golden Fleece Competition concluded this month, with the announcement of the winners at a ceremony held at the Museum. Meet the winners of the Hellenic Museum’s inaugural Golden Fleece Competition.

Bridget Headlam, coordinator of the children’s art competition, said that the Hellenic Museum education team had been delighted to receive over seventy entries from young people all across Victoria, not only artworks from individual children, but several classroom submissions from both Greek and non-Greek schools.

The winning entries, created in response to the theme of Mythical Monsters, included a meditative Medusa, terrifying Typhon, Corinthian helmet-wearing Cerberus and a playful Pegasus

Sarah Craig, Director of the Hellenic Museum was impressed by the skill and creativity of entries:

“What stood out most to us was the variety. No two entries were the same, and that is exactly what makes this competition so special. Some works were bold and dramatic, some were playful and full of colour, and others carried a quiet sense of mystery. Together, they reminded us how myths come alive in different ways for every person who encounters them.”

The winning artworks included Clement’s Typhon (Winner, Levels P–3), Billy’s Hippocornasus (Runner Up, Levels P–3), Layan’s Fire Lion Gryphon (Winner, Levels 4–6), Annabelle’s Trojan Pegacorn (Runner Up, Levels 4–6), Ilayda’s Corinthian Helmet-Wearing Cerberus (Winner, Levels 7–8) and Steven’s “Medusa in Silence” (Runner Up, Levels 7–8).

Layan, the winner in the Years 4–6 category for her Fire Lion Gryphon (pictured), said that she was “very happy” to be an award winner in the competition. When asked about her favourite part of creating art she said, “colouring it in, and just adding the glitter to it.”

The first prizes for the competition were Toys-R-Us vouchers generously sponsored by Directed Technologies, while the runners up were awarded a Hellenic Museum prize pack. After receiving their prizes, the award-winners took part in a special object-based learning session, where they got to handle thousands of year old artefacts from ancient Greece and have a private tour of the museum’s exhibits, including the landmark “Rituals: Gifts for the Gods.”
