The end of the Souvlaki?

Melbourne Council demands an end to meat consumption signaling the end of the Souvlaki

12 July, 2024

The Yarra City Council in Melbourne has rolled out a radical initiative urging residents to embrace a vegetarian lifestyle as part of its strategy to combat the imminent climate crisis. Melbourne Council demands an end to meat consumption signaling “the end of the souvlaki” following its comprehensive Climate Emergency Plan, adopted unanimously, which emphasizes reducing meat consumption due to its significant environmental impact.

One of Australia’s wokest councils, which governs inner-city Melbourne suburbs such as Richmond, Collingwood, and Fitzroy, has urged its residents to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle as part of its “Climate Emergency”.

The plan, spanning 81 pages and effective from 2024 to 2030, aims to address the looming climate and ecological challenges. It encourages residents to transition towards plant-based diets, utilize active and public transportation, and practice mindful consumption of resources.

Citing evidence that current dietary habits, particularly high consumption of animal products, contribute substantially to emissions, the council stresses the necessity of adopting plant-based diets to limit global heating to 1.5°C. The plan highlights concerns such as deforestation, methane emissions from livestock, and the environmental costs associated with the transportation and refrigeration of animal products.

Bill Gates recently said that he believes rich nations would help the global fight against climate change by consuming only plant-based meat products instead of beef.

In a recent interview with Technology Review, Gates discussed his new book, “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster,” and emphasized the benefits rich nations could produce by moving to “100% synthetic beef.”

Gates told Technology Review that he acknowledges the alternative argument that getting rid of cows is viewed as an unpopular approach, but he said that the benefits of plant protein are worth a shift for some countries.

“Eventually, that green premium is modest enough that you can sort of change the [behavior of] people or use regulation to totally shift the demand,” Gates said. “So for meat in the middle-income-and-above countries, I do think it’s possible.”

Additionally, the council advises residents to consider switching their superannuation and banking to institutions that do not invest in fossil fuels, aligning with their broader agenda to combat climate change and promote equity in Melbourne.

Yarra City Council’s initiative underscores their commitment to climate action, integrating indigenous knowledge into land management practices and aiming for sustainable urban development. They were among the first in Australia to declare a climate emergency and achieved carbon-neutral status in 2012. The new plan includes goals like planting 200 native trees annually to support local wildlife and reduce maintenance needs, reflecting a holistic approach to climate emergency response.

Ultimately, the council emphasizes the imperative of reevaluating humanity’s relationship with nature to secure a sustainable future. “A climate emergency response means rethinking our relationship with nature and tradition,” the plan concluded.
