Melbourne Cup punters are being warned to prepare for wet and windy conditions as showers are expected across the city on race day.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicts rainfall between 1mm and 10mm, westerly winds of up to 35 km/h, and a maximum temperature of 17°C.
Thousands of racing fans and revellers arriving at Flemington are facing grey skies and a chilly day. Senior meteorologists have described the conditions as a “wintry feeling day” with wind chill likely making it feel colder.
Race time at 3pm remains uncertain, with showers expected before the race and possibly continuing afterwards. Punters are advised to bring ponchos and gumboots to stay dry.
The wet and overcast conditions are expected to persist throughout the week, with showers forecast until next Monday.
