Melbourne commuters stand to gain major time savings once the $34.5 billion Suburban Rail Loop East (SRL East) opens, with new modelling revealing up to 40 minutes saved on certain routes.
The SRL East, a 26-kilometre underground rail line from Cheltenham to Box Hill, is the most expensive infrastructure project in Victoria’s history. Its goal: connect major suburbs without requiring a trip into the CBD.
Key highlights:
- Cheltenham to Monash University: 10 minutes (currently 50 mins by public transport or 34 mins by car)
- Cheltenham to Deakin University: 19 minutes (saving 40 mins on public transport, 29 mins by car)
- Frankston to Monash Medical Centre: 15-minute reduction
Premier Jacinta Allan said the SRL would give commuters “more time in their day” by reducing time “stuck in traffic or on trains.”
However, not all routes benefit equally. For example, driving from Bayswater to Monash University remains faster than taking the SRL in some cases.
Education & Economy Boost
Universities have hailed the project. Monash University’s Simon Kupec says it will boost “connectivity and employment,” especially around the Monash Technology Precinct, which includes:
- Victorian Heart Hospital
- Moderna’s manufacturing site
- Australian Synchrotron
- CSIRO and more
Deakin University also praised the rail connection to its Burwood campus, calling it vital for regional and urban students alike.
Concerns & Cost
Despite support, critics have raised concerns over high costs and limited early usage. Leaked reports suggest passenger numbers may be lower than existing lines, but the government argues the long-term benefits — like removing 600,000 cars from roads and enabling 70,000 new homes — outweigh short-term hurdles.
With over $7.6bn already contracted, works are underway at several key sites including Burwood and Southland.
The SRL is expected to open in 2035.
