Mike Bush Sworn in as Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Amid Crisis of Confidence

27 June, 2025

Mike Bush has officially taken the reins as Victoria Police’s new Chief Commissioner, stepping into the top role during one of the force’s most turbulent periods.

The New Zealand police veteran, who served as the Commissioner of the NZ Police from 2014 to 2020, was sworn in at 8:00am Friday in Melbourne, in a ceremony followed by a Māori powhiri, a traditional welcome honouring his heritage and acknowledging his new responsibilities in Victoria.

Bush’s appointment marks a critical reset for Victoria Police, which has endured months of controversy, resignations, and internal strife among its top brass. His arrival follows a chaotic leadership transition: former chief commissioner Shane Patton was ousted after a no-confidence motion; his replacement Rick Nugent quit after a short stint, and Deputy Commissioner Neil Paterson’s contract was abruptly cancelled.

Premier Jacinta Allan stood alongside Bush on his first day, underscoring the government’s commitment to restoring stability in a force beset by scandal and public concern. Bush is expected to tour the Police Academy in Glen Waverley, meet new recruits, and speak with frontline officers, signalling a hands-on leadership approach.

However, the challenges ahead are daunting. Victoria is facing a surge in youth crime, organised gang activity, and worsening domestic violence statistics. Bush must also address critical staffing shortages—about 700 officers are currently on sick leave, while over 1,000 positions remain unfilled.

Community confidence in policing has suffered, and Bush’s mandate is not only operational but symbolic. His leadership will need to bridge internal divisions, improve morale, and rebuild trust with the Victorian public.

In taking the oath, Mike Bush brings a reputation for reform and resilience from New Zealand. Now, he will need every ounce of that experience to confront Victoria’s complex policing landscape.
