Mitsotakis–Erdogan meeting confirmed for September 23 in New York

19 September, 2025

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are expected to meet on September 23 in New York during the UN General Assembly. Government sources indicate the meeting will likely take place at midday local time (evening in Greece).

The discussion will focus on bilateral relations, framed by recent developments: Chevron’s entry into Greece for offshore exploration south of Crete and tensions in the Aegean over recent Navtex notices, with Ankara reiterating claims about the demilitarization of Greek islets.

Mitsotakis emphasized that Greece will not discuss issues related to disarmament, grey zones, or sovereignty. He left open the possibility of referring maritime delimitation disputes to the International Court of Justice, provided Turkey acknowledges there is only one dispute.

Regarding Eurobasket, the Prime Minister highlighted that “sport unites” and praised gestures of unity from players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Alperen Sengun, reflecting the potential for harmony between the two nations despite political tensions.
