Moomba Festival upholds historical truth by protecting the legacy of the Star of Vergina

5 March, 2026

Moomba Festival Upholds Historical Truth by Protecting the Legacy of the Star of Vergina, a move welcomed by the Pan-Macedonian Association of Melbourne and Victoria, which publicly thanked organisers of Melbourne’s iconic festival for what it described as a responsible decision to prevent the misuse of the historic symbol during this year’s celebrations.

In a statement released this week, the organisation commended festival authorities for recognising the historical and cultural significance of the ancient symbol and for ensuring it was not used in ways that could misrepresent or appropriate its meaning.

“The Pan-Macedonian Association of Victoria sincerely thanks the organisers of Moomba Festival for their sensitivity and responsible decision not to allow the misuse of the historic Star of Vergina,” the association said.

A symbol rooted in ancient Macedonian Greece

The Star of Vergina – also known as the 16-ray Sun of Vergina – is widely recognised as an emblem associated with the ancient Macedonian kingdom. The symbol gained international prominence in 1977 when renowned Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos discovered it decorating a golden larnax in the royal tombs at Aigai (modern-day Vergina) in northern Greece, believed to belong to King Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great.

Since that discovery, the emblem has become closely linked with the royal Argead dynasty and the historical legacy of ancient Macedonia. Today it appears in a range of official and cultural contexts in Greece and is widely used by organisations representing Macedonian Greeks worldwide.

The Pan-Macedonian Association stressed that the symbol is not merely decorative but forms part of the cultural heritage of Hellenism.

A symbol at the centre of modern political controversy

The Star of Vergina has also been at the centre of international political controversy over the past three decades. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, the newly independent Republic of Macedonia adopted the Vergina Sun as part of its national flag, a move that Greece strongly opposed, arguing that the emblem represented ancient Greek heritage and the historical legacy of Macedonia within Greece.

The dispute became one of the most sensitive elements of the wider “Macedonia naming issue,” which affected diplomatic relations between Athens and Skopje for more than 25 years. Under a 1995 interim agreement mediated by the United Nations, the symbol was removed from the neighbouring country’s flag as part of efforts to normalise relations.

Although the Prespa Agreement of 2018 ultimately resolved the name dispute by renaming the country “North Macedonia,” sensitivities surrounding historical symbols and heritage remain particularly strong among Macedonian Greeks and diaspora communities.

Respect for heritage in multicultural Australia

Against this background, the Pan-Macedonian Association said it welcomed the Moomba Festival’s recognition of the symbol’s significance.

“We appreciate Moomba’s respect for historical truth and cultural heritage by ensuring that this ancient Greek emblem is not appropriated or misrepresented,” the organisation stated.

The association added that Australia’s multicultural society thrives when cultural expression is celebrated responsibly and with respect for historical context.

“As we celebrate diversity, it is essential that cultural heritage and historical truth are treated with accuracy and dignity.”

Commitment to promoting Hellenic heritage

The Pan-Macedonian Association reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the history, culture and traditions of Hellenism in Australia while encouraging dialogue and mutual respect between communities.

The organisation, which represents Macedonian Greeks in Victoria, regularly participates in cultural initiatives, commemorations and educational programmes aimed at preserving the heritage of the Greek region of Macedonia and its historic legacy.

Its statement concluded by emphasising that the preservation of cultural symbols is an important part of maintaining historical memory within Australia’s diverse society.
