New rules for Aussie Community Grants slammed as ‘woke’ and ‘ridiculous’

18 February, 2025

The Albanese government has faced backlash for altering the Stronger Communities program, which thousands of local sports clubs and community groups rely on for funding.

The revised guidelines now prioritise spending on initiatives like First Nations cultural spaces, gender-neutral facilities, and support for immigrants over more traditional expenses like sports equipment and venue upgrades.

The Stronger Communities program previously provided up to $150,000 in grants across Australia’s 151 federal electorates, helping not-for-profits purchase items such as air conditioning, kitchen upgrades, and sports equipment. In 2023, more than 2300 organisations received grants, with the Canterbury Little Athletics Club using their funding for high-jump mat storage, streamlining setup and encouraging more equipment purchases.

However, under the new rules, activities like buying sports equipment, upgrading kitchens, or replacing scoreboards are no longer eligible. Instead, the program now supports projects such as creating websites for newly arrived immigrants, building First Nations cultural spaces, or installing gender-neutral facilities.

Opposition critics, including Shadow Infrastructure Minister Bridget McKenzie, have condemned the changes as “woke” and “ridiculous.” McKenzie argued the new guidelines show the government is out of touch with local needs, stating that people simply want funding for practical items like pie warmers or shade cloths.

A Victorian sports club leader, who wished to remain anonymous, said the revised criteria would make it more difficult for clubs to access funding. The government has declined to comment on the specific reasons for the changes, and a request for more details has been blocked under legal professional privilege.

While the program still allows a broad range of organisations to apply for funding, the shift in focus has left many questioning whether their needs will still be met under the new criteria.
