On this week’s episode of Ta Leme, we had the fantastic Monash Hellenic Student Society (MHSS) come down to the studio to have a chat!
Host Dean Kotsianis with co-hosts George Nikolakopoulos and Eleni Nzifas welcomed MHSS presidents Amy Tsagournos and Despina Skourlis, along with MHSS executive members Dean Zaharopoulos and Peter Andreakos for what turned out to be an enlightening yet controversial edition of the show.
Whilst the show commenced with the guests introducing themselves in the typical Ta Leme way, the majority of the show’s discussion revolved around the theme of women and the role that they are to play in the family/society- both in tradition and in the future.
One of the most interesting points that was taken out of the show was the idea of implicit vs conscious gender roles- for example, is it right that when it comes to hosting a party the men tend to stay outside around the barbeque whilst the women tend to work furiously in the kitchen to prepare all other aspects of the meal?
Whilst this may not be done with the conscious intent to force people into a course of action or impose gender roles, are we doing enough to allow people to make up their own minds as to what roles they would like to adopt?
Whilst there are no clear-cut answers to these questions, it is through dialogue that we are able to learn from each other and gain a deeper understanding of such issues- something that this show’s guests were able to excel in.

‘ENA’ Unforgettable Night
On Friday the 22nd of November the
collective efforts of the RMIT United Hellenic Society (RUSH),
La Trobe University Greek Society (LUGS) and
Victoria University Greek Society (VUGS) brought a big Greek youth night called “Ena Hellenic Night” to send off the University semester off with a bang.
It was a successful night with Greek youth gathering at the Coburg Church for a night of eating, dancing and singing.
The food and service from the Coburg Church hall was amazing with Barbara and her team cooking up a storm in the kitchen.
Some highlights of the night were the tasty Greek food cooked up by Barbra and her team at the venue, the wide selection of traditional dances, the raffle prizes from the sponsors and the Greek alcoholic hampers that were handed out with RUSH’s Katherine Hatzis and John Paras entertaining the crowd as they showcased the selection.
Thank you to the supporting sponsors of the night, Bahari – the Hellenic plate, Elia Greek Tavern, Grk Kitchen + Bar, The Theo, Yiannis Pantheon Cakes, My choice chiropractic, Dinoharis group, Virgin Australia and @rentmywardrobee.
Also a thank you to our partners of the night, Protect Entertainment, Tongue and Groove photography and Taki’s Balls.
Finally, big thank you to Barbara and her team at the Coburg Orthodox Church Hall for providing amazing service and assistance on the nights.
RUSH, LUGS and VUGS would also like to extend thanks to all who bought tickets for the night that were local and interstate, Greek youth brotherhoods and our friends at the Greek university clubs and societies affiliated with NUGAS for their never-ending support.
