Melbourne’s Minister for Sport, Steve Dimopoulos, has expressed his desire for the Greek national team to play a friendly match against Australia’s Socceroos over the next two years in Melbourne, the second most Greek-speaking city in the world!
In Melbourne, the city where 50% of Australia’s Greek population resides, there is a strong possibility that our national team will be there within the next two years. This is the intention of the Victorian Government, as announced at a meeting between Makis Gagatsis and George Mavrotas with the Minister for Environment, Tourism, Sport and Major Events of Victoria, Steve Dimopoulos.
The Hellenic Football Federation’s announcement:
(Ε.Π.Ο – Ελληνική Ποδοσφαιρική Ομοσπονδία) President Makis Gagatsis met with Secretary General for Sport George Mavrotas and the Minister for Environment, Tourism, Sport and Major Events of the State of Victoria, Steve Dimopoulos, during the latter’s visit to Greece.
During the meeting, Mr. Gagatsis accepted an invitation for the Greek national team to participate in a friendly match with Australia in Melbourne, akin to the friendlies of 2006 and 2016, ideally within the next two years, with the aim of giving thousands of Greek Australians the opportunity to watch the Greek national team up close.
Mr. Gagatsis stressed that the request will be taken into consideration in due course by Greece’s manager Ivan Jovanovic and in cooperation with the Football Australian, taking into account the current competitive obligations of both national teams.
