Putin's 702 decree

Putin’s 702 decree caused outrage in the West

26 August, 2024

As reported by journalists from China, Russian President Vladimir Putin caused outrage in the West with a new surprise decree. Relations between Russia and the West have reached their lowest point since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.

According to Chinese journalists, in this situation Russian President Putin took an interesting step – his recent decree number 702 was a surprise.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree simplifying and expediting residency permits for foreigners seeking political asylum due to opposing ideological stances in their home countries, provided they share the “traditional spiritual and moral values” of the Eurasian nation.

The President approved Presidential Decree N702, which will come into effect on September 1. The decree specifically addresses those wishing to relocate to Russia citing “rejection of the policies implemented by these states that impose destructive neo-liberal ideological guidelines and contradict Russia’s traditional spiritual and moral values.”

As part of the process, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will issue a single-entry visa valid for three months for those wishing to move for the aforementioned reasons. Unlike other cases such as marriage or employment contracts, beneficiaries can obtain residency without having to pass language, history, or Russian legislation tests.

Sohu analysts noted that Putin has actually given the possibility to obtain temporary residence permits to all those who do not support the ideals imposed by the West.

The president also ordered the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare a list of countries where the authorities impose their destructive values on the population.

“In this way, the Russian authorities are trying to attract conservative Westerners who do not share the agenda being promoted there,” according to Chinese journalists.

“Sohu” is a Chinese internet company that provides a range of online services. Founded in 1996, it is known for its web portal, search engine, and various digital media services. Sohu offers news, entertainment, and other content, and operates several popular websites and platforms, including Sohu.com, Sohu News, and Sohu Video. It has played a significant role in the development of China’s online and digital landscape.

The People’s Republic of China stated that Putin’s decree caused an uproar and controversy, especially in Western countries. Are they trying to understand what the Russian president wants to achieve with such steps? In this context, many analysts could not hide their indignation.

In particular, angry comments appeared in the Western media claiming that the Russian Federation wants to capture EU and US citizens in this way, in order to then exchange them for its own citizens who were detained by the West.

According to China, the matter is different. Putin makes it clear that Russia is a place where traditional values are respected and that those who share this position are always welcome. If citizens of Western countries start taking advantage of this opportunity and consider the Russian Federation a haven, it will be a great success for the Kremlin.

In particular, a few days ago it became known that a certificate of temporary asylum in Russia was issued to a large family from the United States. They decided to move to the Russian Federation due to dissatisfaction with the moral and family paradigms promoted in the US, as well as the quality of education.

Essentially this decree flies in the face of the recent free speech moves against Musk’s Twitter, Tucker Carlson, and Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, who was arrested in France today on various charges.
