South Melbourne secures record 10th Dockerty Cup title with inspired performance by Campbell Dovison

11 August, 2025

South Melbourne reaffirmed its dominance in Victorian football by clinching the Dockerty Cup for a second consecutive year, delivering a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against Heidelberg United in a final that captivated fans with its drama and intensity.

Heidelberg United stunned early with a 5th-minute goal from Asahi Yokokawa, taking the lead and controlling much of the first half. However, the game’s momentum shifted dramatically after halftime with the introduction of 19-year-old Australian youth international Campbell Dovison.

In a stunning impact, Dovison leveled the score with his very first touch — a powerful header at the back post that reignited South Melbourne’s drive and belief. The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time when Nahuel Bonada’s initial shot was saved, but a fumble by goalkeeper Yaren Sozer allowed Charlie Leech to set up Dovison, who hammered home the winner from the edge of the box, sending the crowd into wild celebration.

Coach Sinisa Cohadzic, who took over during a challenging season start, credited a stern halftime team talk for the dramatic turnaround. “The boys’ mentality is exceptional,” he said. “We challenged each other to play with more courage and intensity, and it showed on the pitch.”

This victory marks South Melbourne’s 10th Dockerty Cup title, setting a new record as the most successful club in the competition’s long and storied history — surpassing the Melbourne Knights, who hold nine titles.

The club’s recent resurgence under Cohadzic is evident not only in this cup triumph but also in their progress to the Australia Cup Round of 16. This Wednesday, South Melbourne will face off against reigning A-League premiers Auckland at Lakeside Stadium, a challenge that promises to test their mettle and ambitions on a bigger stage.
