The global football community is in mourning following the death of renowned coach Sven-Göran Eriksson at the age of 76. The Swedish former England manager had revealed in January that he was battling pancreatic cancer and had only a few months left to live.
Just days before his passing, Eriksson reflected on his life and illustrious football career in a moving Amazon Prime documentary titled Sven. In the film, he spoke candidly about his experiences, which allowed him to travel the world and achieve many of his dreams, including fulfilling his lifelong ambition of managing Liverpool, albeit in a Legends match against Ajax this past March.
Eriksson had an impressive career, having managed clubs such as Lazio, Roma, and most notably, the England national team.
In 2001, he made history as the first foreign manager to take charge of England’s men’s team, where he coached the “Golden Generation” featuring stars like David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, and Frank Lampard. However, due to health issues, Eriksson stepped down from his role as sporting director of Swedish club Karlstad in February 2023.
Eriksson’s passing marks the end of a remarkable era in football, as he leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations.
