Syrian security forces launched a series of large-scale preemptive operations across the country targeting cells of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), ahead of President Ahmed Al Sara’s upcoming visit to Washington for a high-level meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to a spokesperson for Syria’s Interior Ministry, government forces carried out 61 coordinated raids in multiple regions, resulting in the arrest of 71 individuals suspected of involvement with the extremist group. Explosives, firearms, and other materials intended for terrorist activity were also seized. The operations were broadcast by state television channel Al Ekhbariya TV, which emphasized that the raids were part of a broader national security effort.
The timing of these operations coincides with President Sara’s planned visit to the United States on November 10. It will mark the first time a Syrian head of state is officially received at the White House, signaling a significant diplomatic shift after years of isolation and strained relations.
During his visit, Sara is expected to formally commit Syria to joining the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS. Washington hopes the move will strengthen the regional campaign to eliminate remaining jihadist strongholds in northern and eastern Syria.
While U.S. officials have yet to confirm the full agenda of the meeting, diplomatic observers view the engagement as a potential turning point in U.S.-Syria relations, especially in the context of renewed counterterrorism cooperation and efforts to stabilize the region.
