Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced plans for the creation of a new political movement aimed at reorganizing the progressive space in Greece, during a high-profile event at the Pallas theater.
Speaking in front of key figures including Sokratis Famellos, Dimitris Haritsis, and 25 lawmakers, Tsipras criticized current opposition leaderships and argued that existing progressive parties have “closed their cycle.”
Calling for “change” and a “New Metapolitefsi,” Tsipras said that Greece’s progressive forces require a radical reorganization. “We need a large, diverse, activist, programmatically coherent progressive movement, capable of embracing all left-wing, democratic, and socially conscious citizens,” he said. The goal, he explained, is to reclaim progressive governance in the next elections.
The former Prime Minister emphasized grassroots self-organization as central to this new initiative. He called for local initiatives in cities, neighborhoods, workplaces, and universities to rebuild democracy, justice, and progressive values. “From now on, there will be invitations for all, but no reserved seats in the front row for anyone,” he stated, highlighting inclusivity over hierarchy.
Tsipras also criticized the current government and the political system, framing them as part of the problem rather than the solution. He concluded by calling for a “shock of democracy, integrity, and justice,” a renewed sense of patriotism, and citizen participation to reshape political balances and restore the progressive bloc.
According to Tsipras, the new movement will allow citizens to regain agency and build a “collective vision for change,” emphasizing participation, self-organization, and the mobilization of small and large initiatives to create a broad political force.
