Victoria may bid again for weapons expo despite protests

17 September, 2024

Treasurer Tim Pallas has indicated that Victoria might submit a bid to host the controversial weapons systems expo once again, despite recent protests that led to chaotic and costly disruptions. On the final day of the event, anti-war and anti-Israel demonstrators escalated their actions, blocking Kings Way Bridge by abandoning a car and hurling abuse at attendees on Spencer Street Bridge. The police responded quickly, towing the vehicle and arresting two activists who had locked themselves inside it.

Despite these disruptions, Pallas pointed out that the economic benefits of the expo, estimated at $70 million, seem to outweigh the negatives. He expressed interest in potentially hosting the event again but noted that future discussions might include considering a different venue to avoid similar issues.

Premier Jacinta Allan condemned the violence associated with the protests, emphasizing the importance of peaceful demonstrations. She criticized some protesters for arriving with the intent to cause disorder rather than engage in peaceful dissent, which led to a strong police response. Allan refrained from discussing the financial aspects of hosting the event in detail, citing commercial confidentiality.

Allan also dismissed the idea of a permit system for protests, arguing that those intent on causing disruption would likely ignore permit requirements. She defended the state’s decision to host the expo, highlighting the need to support local companies involved in defense efforts. Allan concluded by expressing gratitude to Victoria Police for maintaining public safety during the protests.
