In a dramatic turn of events, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton has resigned just days after a scathing vote of no confidence in his leadership.
The decision to step down came following increasing scrutiny of his tenure, including the department’s handling of key challenges.
Patton, who has served with the force for over 45 years, announced his resignation in a statement on Sunday night, citing the current circumstances surrounding his position. “It is with a heavy heart that I have made this decision, however, I think it is the right one to allow fresh leadership in the role,” he said.
The outgoing Chief Commissioner expressed deep pride in his long service to Victoria Police, thanking the community for their support and acknowledging the dedication of his colleagues. “Victoria Police is an organisation I have committed my life to. To every employee of Victoria Police, thank you for everything you do, every day, to keep the community safe,” he added.
Rick Nugent, Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner, will take over as acting Chief Commissioner, with Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam leading the force until Nugent’s appointment is formalised. Patton’s resignation will spark a search for a permanent successor to lead the state’s police force.
Premier Jacinta Allan paid tribute to Patton’s long career, highlighting his leadership during challenging times, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic. “Shane Patton started as a police cadet in 1978. He went on to lead the force through significant challenges,” she said.
However, the resignation has been met with criticism from the Opposition. Leader Brad Battin argued that Patton’s departure would not address the state’s ongoing crime crisis. He pointed to systemic issues, such as the revolving door of the justice system and insufficient resources for police officers. “A change in leadership alone will not resolve the systemic issues plaguing law and order in our state,” he said.
As the state adjusts to this major leadership shake-up, questions remain about the future of Victoria Police and how the next Commissioner will tackle mounting public concerns.
