Victoria Police hunt eight anarchist protesters after violent CBD rally

13 November, 2025

Victoria Police have released images of eight alleged anarchist protesters wanted for questioning after violent clashes in Melbourne’s CBD last month, where officers were attacked with rocks, glass bottles, and other projectiles.

The violence unfolded during an October 19 rally where drone footage captured masked individuals hurling about a dozen rocks at police. Investigators say the rocks were hidden behind a banner before being thrown in coordinated attacks that left two officers injured.

A female sergeant in her early 40s suffered a serious hand injury and is undergoing ongoing rehabilitation to regain movement, while a senior constable from Geelong required stitches after sustaining a deep leg laceration. Several police shields were also cracked, and a metal detection wand was stolen during the confrontation.

Deputy Commissioner of Regional Operations Bob Hill condemned the actions of the anarchist group, calling their behavior “nothing short of deplorable.” He said that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, violence against police will not be tolerated.

“Officers come from across Victoria to maintain public order and ensure community safety. We are determined to identify and charge every offender involved,” Hill stated.

Detective Inspector Geoff Owen added that police would arrest the eight individuals once identified. “There is absolutely no place for such antagonistic and volatile behaviour toward police,” he said, urging the public to help identify those in the released photographs.

Police have already arrested one Geelong man accused of throwing a rock at an officer. He has been charged and released on bail pending a court appearance on November 20.

Authorities say the group of masked protesters initially appeared at the rally to oppose anti-immigration demonstrators but later turned their aggression toward police and government representatives.

Victoria Police continue their investigation and have called on anyone who recognizes the individuals to contact Crime Stoppers.
