Victoria Police launches major operation Furlong ahead of Melbourne Cup long weekend

Rising fatalities spark crackdown on speeding, alcohol, and distracted driving

Victoria Police is ramping up road safety efforts as the state prepares for the Melbourne Cup long weekend, announcing Operation Furlong, a major policing initiative aimed at curbing the rising number of fatal accidents on Victorian roads. Officers will patrol highways, regional roads, and urban streets, targeting speeding, impaired driving, and dangerous behaviors that have contributed to a worrying surge in crashes.

Recent statistics released by authorities reveal a 75% increase in deaths caused by head-on collisions, many stemming from avoidable mistakes such as fatigue, inattention, or mobile phone distractions. Assistant Commissioner of Road Policing Glenn Weir warned that drivers failing to maintain their lane were drifting into oncoming traffic, often with fatal consequences.

“These collisions are entirely preventable,” Weir said. “We are seeing drivers momentarily distracted or tired, and that split second can cost lives. Our message is clear: stay alert, drive safely, and respect the road.”

Operation Furlong will also include random breath tests and roadside drug checks, as Victoria Police reminds motorists that impaired driving remains a major factor in fatal crashes. With tens of thousands of people expected to travel across the state during the long weekend, police are emphasizing vigilance, responsible driving, and adherence to speed limits.

Authorities are urging all road users to plan ahead, take breaks on long journeys, avoid distractions, and respect the rules of the road to prevent further tragedies.
