Victoria residents urged to register for upcoming local municipal elections

24 July, 2024

Eligible residents and those who pay municipal rates are urged to check that they are registered to vote in the upcoming local municipal election by 4:00 pm on Wednesday, August 7.

In anticipation of the registration deadline, the Electoral Commissioner, Sven Bluemmel, has issued the following notice: “If you are 18 years or older and live or pay council tax in a Victorian municipality, register and have your say on the future of your local municipality.”

Australian citizens who have recently turned 18 or changed their address can register or update their details online at vec.vic.gov.au/enrolment.

Everyone on the state electoral roll is automatically registered at their current address for this election. There are also additional municipal electoral categories for non-resident Victorian landlords, tenants, company representatives and non-Australian citizens who pay council tax.

The regulations for registering for the municipality have changed. Property owners who do not reside in the municipal district, but who may qualify to vote because they pay council tax, should contact their local municipality for more information.

Victoria’s 2024 local municipal election will be the largest single election in the state, with a projected 4.7 million voters participating in 465 individual elections in 78 municipalities.

The Moira Shire is under compulsory administration and will not hold a general election this October.

More information on registration is available by calling 131 832 or at vec.vic.gov.au, where voters can also sign up to the VoterAlert service to receive important election reminders via SMS text message and email.
