We did it for Melbourne – We did it for Greece: Greek heritage shines at Moomba Festival

11 March, 2025

A Historic Return of the Greek Community to Melbourne’s Celebrated Event

Melbourne’s streets were alive with the vibrant spirit of Greek pride this past weekend as the Greek community made a historic return to the Moomba Festival—a major cultural celebration in Australia that marks the unity and diversity of the city. After 31 years, Greece was once again represented at one of the country’s largest and most beloved cultural events, an occasion that not only celebrated Greek heritage but also highlighted the multicultural fabric that defines Melbourne.

For many, this moment was a milestone, honoring both the rich history of Greece and the diversity that makes Melbourne a truly unique global city.

A Grand Parade Marks a Historic Return

The Moomba Parade served as the stage for Greece’s remarkable return to the festival. It had been since 1994 that Greek culture was last represented in this massive, city-wide event. This year, the renowned “Manasis School of Greek Dance and Culture,” led by Dimosthenes Manasis, brought this proud tradition back to life. With a dedicated team of dancers, the school showcased Greek culture in full force, reminding both young and old of the importance of preserving cultural legacies for future generations.

Dressed in traditional Greek costumes, the parade participants proudly waved Greek, Australian, Cypriot, and even a flag bearing the Sun of Vergina. As they danced and walked down the parade route, they celebrated the diverse expressions of Greek identity—from the various regions of Greece to the Orthodox faith that unites millions worldwide. It was a moment of shared pride, as the participants conveyed a message of unity, acceptance, and love—not only for their Greek roots but also for Australia, their second home.

A Community United in Celebration

What made this participation even more special was the diversity among those involved. It wasn’t just the Greeks coming together to celebrate; it was a blend of communities from all walks of life in Melbourne. From young children to senior citizens, and Australians from all backgrounds, Moomba became a true festival of cultural interaction, where music, dance, and shared joy united everyone in a common celebration.

Following the parade, the Greek community continued to share its rich heritage with the public by showcasing traditional Greek dances. For an hour, they invited everyone to join in and be part of the festivity, offering a genuine display of what it means to live in a multicultural society where cultural exchange is not just allowed, but embraced and celebrated.

A Long-Awaited Moment of Pride

For Dimosthenes Manasis, this event was the culmination of years of hard work and determination. In an emotional post on social media after the parade, he expressed the joy and pride that swept through everyone involved. Reflecting on the significance of the moment, Manasis acknowledged that for many of the participants, this was their first experience connecting with Greek culture on such a large scale.

“The participation of Greek culture in the Moomba Festival is not just a celebration of our past, but a statement for our future,” said Mr. Manasis. “Today, we celebrated our identity, our history, and our faith—alongside our Australian friends.”

This moment carried profound meaning, as it united a community that has worked tirelessly for decades to keep its traditions alive while weaving them into the broader Australian social fabric. For many of the dancers, this wasn’t just a chance to share their cultural pride—it was a reunion with the heritage of their ancestors, a heritage often overlooked in large, mainstream events.

A Bright Future Ahead

The Greek community’s participation in Moomba is more than just a one-off event. It is a symbol of strength, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Melbourne’s Greek diaspora. It serves as a reminder of how far the community has come in its journey to become an integral part of Australia’s multicultural landscape.

As Dimosthenes Manasis aptly put it, “We did it for Melbourne. We did it for Greece.” With this landmark moment, the Greek community has not only reintroduced Greece to one of Australia’s largest cultural events but also paved the way for future generations to continue sharing and nurturing their rich cultural heritage, allowing it to thrive in the heart of one of the most multicultural cities in the world—Melbourne.
