The Greek language is one of the fundamental pillars of our civilization, an unbroken chain that connects the past with the present and the future. From Homer’s epics and the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle to modern literature and its contribution to the sciences, the Greek language is not merely a means of communication but a living vessel of ideas, values, and identity.
February 9, the World Greek Language Day, is an occasion for both celebration and reflection. It is a day dedicated to a language that continues to inspire and influence the world, maintaining its resilience through the centuries. At the same time, it highlights the importance of preserving and promoting the Greek language, especially for the younger generations of the Diaspora, who serve as a vital link to their cultural heritage.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recognizing this timeless value, is taking initiatives to strengthen the global presence of the Greek language and support Greek language learning. Its strategic plan for the Greek Diaspora, collaborations with academic institutions, and the enhancement of educational programs demonstrate the State’s commitment to preserving this invaluable heritage.
In this spirit, we present the message of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Georgios Kotsiras, on the occasion of the celebration of World Greek Language Day.
MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, MR. G. KOTSIRAS
ON THE OCCASION OF THE CELEBRATION OF WORLD GREEK LANGUAGE DAY
FEBRUARY 9, 2025
Greek men and women around the world, Friends of Greece, The celebration of World Greek Language Day is a unique opportunity to reflect on the universality and timelessness of the Greek language. A language that has been continuously spoken for centuries, serving as the ark of Greek identity through time. A language with a unique contribution to global culture, science, and the arts—a language that unites, interprets, and gives meaning.
Through a series of initiatives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs prioritizes the systematic promotion of the Greek language internationally. The promotion of Greek language learning is one of the key objectives of the Ministry’s Strategic Plan for the Greek Diaspora 2024-2027. This Strategic Plan also includes the celebration of February 9, an initiative that has been a long-standing request of the Greek Diaspora.
With the aim of strengthening the Greek language, history, and culture, we have signed a Cooperation Protocol with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. We have upgraded the “staellinika.com” application, a modern educational platform for learning Greek, and we have strategically reinforced chairs and programs of Greek studies around the world. At the same time, we have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the “Study in Greece” organization to connect Greece’s academic community with the Greek Diaspora and promote the internationalization of Greek higher education.
Dear friends, Proud of our linguistic heritage, together with our diplomatic and consular authorities abroad, Greek schools, and our Diaspora organizations, we continue to highlight the contribution of the Greek language to global culture. A language forged through our long shared historical journey, fostering Greek culture and embodying universal concepts and values. We must safeguard this proud legacy for future generations.
Georgios Kotsiras
