Sokratis Famellos calls for joint action of progressive parties on Gaza

22 August, 2025

In a move to coordinate and strengthen Greece’s diplomatic stance amid the crisis in Gaza, Sokratis Famellos, leader of SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance, reached out today to the heads of progressive opposition parties.

His goal is to promote unified positions toward the government, urging Greece to take initiatives to halt the invasion of Gaza and impose strict sanctions on Israel.

According to sources from SYRIZA headquarters, Famellos’ proposal also includes full recognition of the Palestinian state by Greece. Positive responses were received from the leaders of New Left and Course of Freedom, Alexis Charitsis and Zoe Konstantopoulou, respectively, signaling readiness for parliamentary collaboration and public statements.

The communication with KKE, through Dimitris Koutsoumbas, emphasized the party’s strategy to strengthen popular mobilization. Koutsoumbas reportedly said that “in these critical hours, as Israel carries out its brutal plan to fully occupy Gaza and commit genocide against the Palestinian people, it is imperative to reinforce public solidarity with Palestinians.”

He also called for implementation of the Parliament’s unanimous resolution recognizing the Palestinian state, highlighting that KKE is committed to contributing all its resources to this effort.

Sources note that the joint declaration by SYRIZA, KKE, New Left, and Course of Freedom, initiated by KKE, remains relevant and serves as a coordinated political platform, amplifying Greece’s voice in international developments in the Middle East.
