Amalia Freeman, the wife of fugitive Dezi Freeman, has issued an emotional plea for her husband to surrender to police, five days after the deadly Porepunkah tragedy.
In a statement delivered through her lawyer on Sunday, Amalia Freeman said she and her children stood with Victoria Police and urged anyone helping her husband to come forward.
“Please Dezi, if you hear or see this, call 000 and arrange a surrender plan with police,” she pleaded.
She added: “On behalf of my children and myself, I want to express our deep sorrow for the loss of Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart on August 26. We are truly devastated by the loss, the pain, and the grief their families, friends and colleagues are now experiencing.”
Amalia Freeman stressed that she and her children did not share her husband’s extremist beliefs and fully respected the work of Victoria Police.
The manhunt for the “armed and dangerous” Dezi Freeman has now entered its sixth day, with hundreds of officers continuing the search across Victoria’s high country. Freeman fled into bushland armed with several weapons after allegedly killing two officers and wounding another last Tuesday.
Police patrols continued across Porepunkah on Sunday, with a new staging point set up at the DEECA site in Ovens.
In her statement, Amalia Freeman issued a stark warning: “If anyone is hiding, helping, or supporting Dezi, please call 000 immediately. If you’ve seen anything, even the smallest detail, tell police.”
The community remains tense as police warn the standoff could become a prolonged and dangerous manhunt.
