Scenes of panic unfolded Saturday night at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC after gunshots were reported inside the Washington Hilton, where senior US officials and journalists had gathered.
US President Donald Trump was quickly escorted off the stage by agents from the United States Secret Service. Vice President JD Vance and Cabinet members were also present. All officials have been confirmed safe.
Suspect in custody – Injuries still unclear
Authorities confirmed that one individual has been taken into custody following a shooting near the event’s security screening area. The condition of any possible victims remains unclear as law enforcement continues to assess the situation.
In a social media post, Donald Trump stated that the “shooter has been apprehended,” praising law enforcement for acting “quickly and bravely.” He also indicated he would like the event to continue, though final decisions rest with security officials.
Witnesses describe chaos
Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes inside the ballroom. CNN journalist Jake Tapper said Secret Service agents rushed toward the president as attendees dove under tables in fear.
Wolf Blitzer, who was nearby, said he heard gunshots just feet away and was physically moved to safety by police officers.
High security, but inherent vulnerabilities
The dinner is considered a high-security event due to the concentration of senior political figures in one location. Security analysts note such gatherings present inherent risks despite extensive coordination.
The incident also echoes the 1981 attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan, which occurred at the same hotel.
Investigation ongoing
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the motive and circumstances of the shooting, while security remains heightened in the area. The event was temporarily paused, with organizers considering whether to resume proceedings.
