Nick Kyrgios has made the decision to withdraw from the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games.

In a statement released on social media this morning, the ethereal Aussie superstar announced his decision, citing the issue of no crowds and ongoing injury trouble as the driving factors behind the call.

“Hey guys, I just want to let you know that I’ve decided to withdraw from the Olympics. It’s a decision I didn’t make lightly,” Kyrgios said via a statement on Twitter.

“It’s been my dream to represent Australia at the Olympics and I know I may never get that opportunity again. But I also know myself.

“The thought of playing in front of empty stadiums just doesn’t sit right with me. It never has. I also wouldn’t want to take an opportunity away from a healthy Aussie athlete ready to represent the country.

“I will also take all the time I need to get my body right. Good luck to all the Aussies competing and I’ll see you back on the court real soon.”

Speaking to Nine’s Today just minutes before his official announcement, Kyrgios explained he was looking to get his body right for the upcoming stretch of tennis across the US.

“I’m just in the Bahamas now rehabbing myself, and then I’m going to plan to play some tournaments through the US soon,” Kyrgios said.

“I definitely felt it (my Wimbledon injury) on one serve in the third round. I was obviously able to do some damage that week. And obviously not playing for six months and then coming back and beating someone top 20 in the world.

“I played really well in the second round, I was feeling confident but it just wasn’t to be. And that’s okay.”
