A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Amorgos in the early hours of Thursday, sparking concern among residents but causing no reported damage or injuries.
According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the quake occurred at 1:54am local time. The epicentre was located 16 kilometres south-southwest of Arkesini, a village on the island of Amorgos. The focal depth was measured at 16.2 kilometres.
Despite its strength and timing, the tremor did not result in any injuries or major structural damage. However, the quake was felt across the island and in parts of the Cyclades, prompting unease among locals.
Seismologists continue to monitor the region closely, as the area is known for its active seismic profile. While the current event is not considered alarming, experts note that the zone remains geologically active and advise ongoing vigilance.
Emergency services and local authorities have remained on standby. Preliminary inspections of key infrastructure on the island have not revealed any issues. Amorgos has a long history of seismic activity, and residents are accustomed to occasional tremors.
Authorities are reminding the public to stay informed about earthquake preparedness and to remain calm in the event of further seismic activity.
