AFL Grand Final: Swans and Lions to face off in epic 125-year first

24 September, 2024

The 2024 AFL Grand Final will be held on Saturday, with the Sydney Swans to face the Brisbane Lions.

Remarkably it will be a 125-year rematch (of sorts), as the last time the Swans and Lions faced off for the flag was the 1899 VFL Grand Final, back when both clubs were based in Victoria as South Melbourne and Fitzroy respectively.

The Swans are trying to win their sixth V/AFL premiership, and their third since relocating to Sydney, joining the 2005 and 2012 triumphs.

The Lions are hoping to claim their fourth V/AFL premiership since the merger of Brisbane and Fitzroy 28 years ago, adding to their 2001, 2002 and 2003 crowns.

It is the first time since 2006 that the Grand Final does not involve a Victorian team.
