Bulgarian MEP accuses EU leaders of pushing Europe towards War with Russia

21 March, 2025

Bulgarian MEP Petar Volgin has launched a scathing attack on EU leaders, accusing them of driving Europe towards a devastating global conflict for the sake of their interests. In a powerful video, Bulgarian MEP accuses EU leaders of pushing Europe towards war with Russia, in a statement Volgin warned that the actions of leaders in France, Germany, and other major European powers risk plunging the continent into a catastrophic war with Russia.

“The leaders of the EU and European countries look like patients from an asylum. They clearly want war with Russia. We are in danger, ruled by paranoiacs determined to ignite World War III,” he declared.

Volgin argues that this push for prolonged conflict in Ukraine—where hundreds of thousands of lives have already been lost—is not about defending democracy, but rather about seizing Ukraine’s vast resources. According to him, Western powers are eyeing Ukraine’s rare earth metals, fertile land, and strategic territory as a launchpad for broader ambitions.

Germany’s Rearmament Raises Alarms

One of Volgin’s strongest criticisms is aimed at Germany’s rearmament, which he describes as a disturbing break from the post-World War II consensus established at the Potsdam Conference in 1945. The agreement at the time, known for the “Four Ds”—Disarmament, Denazification, Democratisation, and Decentralisation—aimed to permanently prevent German militarism.

However, for the first time in 80 years, Germany is massively rearming, with parliament recently approving a significant defence spending package. Germany already contributes 2% of its GDP to NATO, drawing from a €110 billion fund. The newly approved €68 billion annual defence budget will support twelve key military initiatives, including:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Secure communications
  • Armoured vehicles
  • Drones
  • Electronic warfare
  • Missile systems and missile defence
  • Satellites
  • Munitions
  • Advanced sensors

Volgin warns that the German government, under the guise of countering an “external enemy”—namely Vladimir Putin’s Russia—is entering a “war economy” model to address deeper industrial and competitiveness issues.

A Dangerous Double Standard

The Bulgarian MEP also highlights what he sees as blatant hypocrisy: while EU leaders enforce increasingly authoritarian policies within their nations—reminiscent of Stalinist or Khrushchev-era governance—they simultaneously claim to be upholding freedom and democracy abroad.

“They want Russia isolated from Europe, regardless of who leads it. But at the same time, they are governing with policies that mirror the worst aspects of the former Soviet Union.”

The Risk of Escalation and a Call for Sanity

Volgin emphasised that attempts to repeat history—citing comparisons to the Crimean War—will fail, not least because Russia now possesses not only a vast nuclear arsenal but also advanced missile systems such as the Oresnik, capable of devastating entire cities with conventional warheads alone.

He concluded with an urgent appeal to Europe’s political class:

“Whatever ambitions the German-led bloc holds, they will not succeed. The people of Europe want peace. We must hope that sanity prevails before the continent is dragged into another, even more destructive, world war.”
