Domestic violence cases in 2024 reach alarming levels: Over 15,000 women victimized

25 November, 2024

Shocking data on domestic violence incidents in Greece during the first ten months of 2024 reveals a troubling surge, with over 15,000 women identified as victims. This figure represents a near doubling compared to the same period in 2023, according to statistics provided by the Hellenic Police (EL.AS).

Between January and October 2024, authorities recorded 18,427 incidents of domestic violence, a stark increase from the 9,860 cases reported in 2023. Arrests have also risen significantly, with 11,308 individuals detained this year compared to 6,453 during the same timeframe last year.

The data underscores a grim reality: the vast majority of victims are women, while perpetrators are overwhelmingly male. Of the victims reported in 2024, 15,571 were women, with men accounting for 5,583 cases. This imbalance highlights the gendered nature of domestic violence, with women disproportionately affected.

The consequences of this epidemic are not limited to statistics. Fourteen women have lost their lives this year at the hands of current or former partners, or male relatives, further illustrating the devastating impact of domestic violence within familial and intimate relationships.

This sharp rise in cases demands urgent attention from policymakers, law enforcement, and support services to address what has become a public health and social crisis.
