The Turkish presidency has dismissed as misinformation claims circulating in some domestic media that “Turkey will halt purchases of Russian natural gas because it has signed an LNG agreement with the United States, and that therefore an energy crisis is looming.” Yet, Erdogan rejects President Trump’s request to halt imports of Russian gas.
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Republican lawmakers are drafting a bill that would impose sanctions on any country doing business with Russia, adding that the measure may also extend to Iran.
The bill would allow Trump to impose tariffs of up to 500% on imports from countries that continue buying Russian energy products and do not actively support Ukraine.
In a statement issued by the Centre for Combating Disinformation within the Turkish Presidency’s Directorate of Communications, officials stressed that:
“Turkey, with its pipeline, LNG, and storage infrastructure, is one of the strongest countries in the region in terms of supply security.
There is no risk of any disruption to natural gas supply or an energy crisis — neither now nor in the coming winter,” the statement added.
The presidency further underlined that:
“Turkey’s natural gas imports from the Russian Federation continue uninterrupted, exactly as planned, under the long-term contracts in force between the relevant institutions.”
At the same time, it clarified that:
“The procurement of natural gas via pipelines and LNG from multiple sources — including the United States, Azerbaijan, Iran, Algeria, Oman, and Qatar — is a technical choice aimed at diversifying supply security, increasing competition, and strengthening flexibility.”
