Farmers stage roadblocks across Macedonia ahead of major protests

4 December, 2025

Farmers and livestock breeders in Macedonia and Thrace are preparing major roadblocks, with key sites targeted in Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, and the Evros region.

On Friday (December 5), farmers from Epanomi, Trilofos, Vasilika, Halkidiki, Galatista, and Triglia plan to set up a blockade at the crucial “Prasina Fanaria” junction near Thessaloniki’s “Macedonia” Airport.

Tractors and agricultural vehicles were already gathering in village squares from early Thursday, as participants assessed their forces ahead of the protest. Local farmers aim to have the blockade fully operational by midday Friday.

In Evros, farmers, livestock breeders, and beekeepers from the municipalities of Didymoteicho and Orestiada are organizing a series of demonstrations from Thursday to Sunday. Machinery will gather in village squares before moving in coordinated convoys to the Ormenio junction. Additional protests will take place on Friday morning at 10:00 in Orestiada’s Saginis Park and the central square of Kyprinos, and at 11:00 in Nea Vyssa’s square. On Sunday, farmers plan to block international freight traffic at the Kastanies junction and halt all vehicles at the Kastanies customs and Ormenio border crossing.

Meanwhile, farmers reached the Promachonas border crossing after bypassing police roadblocks, bringing around 500 tractors and additional machinery. Although the border remains open for now, earlier clashes at Lefkona saw farmers circumventing police barricades through fields, causing major traffic congestion along the Thessaloniki–Serres–Promachonas route, with trucks and cars stranded for hours.

Despite government warnings and statements from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasizing that “extreme actions do not help,” the nationwide mobilizations continue. Farmers in the Evzones area have also allowed the passage of trucks carrying Greek goods and emergency vehicles, while reinforcements from other regions, including 100 tractors from Giannitsa, are expected to join the blockade.
