Firefighters battle overnight wildfires in Attica, Euboea, Kythera, Chania, and Messinia

27 July, 2025

Greek firefighters have been battling relentless wildfires throughout the night in several regions including Attica, Euboea, Kythera, Chania, and Messinia.

Ground forces, volunteers, and local residents are working tirelessly to control the fires, which have caused damage to homes, infrastructure, and farmland.

Two firefighting aircrafts from Italy are expected to arrive in Greece on Sunday, following an official request via the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

Attica: scattered firefronts in Drosopigi and Afidnes

The fire in the Afidnes area is currently under control, though hotspots remain active. Over 220 firefighters, 8 forest commando units, 69 vehicles, and multiple volunteer groups are deployed. At least five people have been hospitalized, including a firefighter with burns, an elderly woman with stroke symptoms, and three others suffering from respiratory issues.

In Kryoneri, houses and land were burned. Greek police have played a key role in evacuating 27 people and assisting firefighting operations with over 110 officers in the field.

Euboea: dangerous terrain and worsening winds

Firefighting operations in Euboea involve 135 firefighters, 6 forest teams, and 38 vehicles. Six firefighters have been hospitalized in Chalkida — two with burns and four with other health issues. Efforts are focused on creating protective zones to prevent the fire from reaching populated areas and farming units. Local authorities warn that shifting winds are increasing the threat.

Kythera: 139 people rescued by sea

On Kythera, the Coast Guard has safely evacuated 139 residents and tourists trapped on Limnionas beach. Firefighting teams remain active on the island, with 67 firefighters and volunteers on the ground, as flames continue to spread.

Chania: fires threaten Paliochora

In western Crete, the wildfire in the municipality of Kantanos-Selino is advancing toward Paliochora. Over 110 firefighters, 5 forest units, and 35 vehicles are battling the blaze. Authorities have evacuated residents from five villages, and several homes have suffered severe damage. High winds continue to hinder containment efforts.

Messinia: multiple evacuations and rapid spread

In Messinia, a major wildfire broke out near Polithea, quickly spreading to Kryoneri and toward Monastiri. Over 100 firefighters, 5 walking units, 30 vehicles, 7 aircraft, and 2 helicopters have been mobilized. Emergency alerts from the 112 system ordered evacuations from several villages, including Aetos, Kopanaki, Chryssotopos, and Revmatia. One elderly man was hospitalized with respiratory and mobility issues.

Firefronts are now heading toward Sellas, Aetos, Malthi, and Zerbisia, as firefighters race against time to prevent further destruction.

Greek authorities emphasize the continued danger, despite some signs of containment. Exhausted firefighting teams are bracing for another long and difficult night.
