Greece’s Euro 2024 dreams crushed by Georgia in penalty shootout

27 March, 2024

Greece suffered a 4-2 defeat to Georgia in penalties after the regular and extra time had ended goalless.

Greece fought, gave it all for more than 120 minutes, reached the source but did not drink water as they failed to win the final of the finals against Georgia and were eliminated from the final phase of Euro 2024 in the penalty shootout.

Poyet’s team was unlucky in extra time as they were outplayed and had plenty of classic chances to score a goal that would have given them the win with the biggest of all being Mavropanos’ cross.

In the penalty shootout the hosts proved to be more accurate in contrast to Greece who saw their captain miss as Mamarandashvili fell well and blocked the ball in his left corner while Yakoumakis sent the ball out.

The Euro 2024 qualifying match erupted into mayhem with a half-time brawl.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Petros Mantalos squared up to each other, with the latter having been very hands-on in a challenge. Soon dozens and players and coaches were involved in the scuffle and Georgia’s substitute goalkeeper Giorgi Loria – their most-capped player ever – was sent off alongside a member of Greece’s backroom team.

Kvaratskhelia had previously received treatment for a facial injury after battling for the ball with Kostas Tsimikas.
