Kimberly Guilfoyle: Greece to become energy hub to counter Russian and Chinese interests

14 November, 2025

Kimberly Guilfoyle, the new U.S. ambassador to Greece, gave her first Greek television interview on ANT1, highlighting Greece’s emerging role as a regional energy hub and its strategic importance in countering Russian and Chinese influence.

Speaking with the Acropolis as a backdrop, Guilfoyle expressed gratitude for her warm reception in Greece, saying she already feels at home.

Guilfoyle emphasized the rapid progress in U.S.-Greece energy cooperation following recent agreements signed at the Zappeion, noting that President Donald Trump appointed her to Greece specifically to advance these strategic goals. “We want to show that Greece can become the energy hub that helps us resist Russian and Chinese interests. Energy independence strengthens national defense and security,” she said.

She highlighted several ongoing initiatives, including the Vertical Corridor for liquefied natural gas, and underscored U.S. involvement in regional energy projects and partnerships. She also stressed the importance of diversifying infrastructure investments in Greece to counter Chinese influence through the port of Piraeus.

Regarding U.S. defense cooperation, Guilfoyle noted that current U.S. legislation prevents the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey but left open the possibility for future discussions.

On her impressions of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his wife, she praised their intelligence, dedication, and commitment to productive collaboration. She also expressed hope that President Trump would visit Greece and speak at the Acropolis.

Guilfoyle recounted her personal journey from a career as a U.S. prosecutor handling high-profile criminal cases to a television commentator on networks like CNN, Fox News, and ABC, before moving into politics. She stressed the importance of being a visible, connected diplomat with millions of social media followers, which she sees as a tool to strengthen U.S.-Greece relations.

She encouraged women to pursue ambitious goals and embrace challenges, reflecting on her own experience as the first female U.S. ambassador to Greece. On a personal note, she shared insights into her family life, friendships, and the importance of loyalty.

Concluding, Guilfoyle highlighted the strength of the U.S. embassy team in Athens, emphasizing its role in supporting bilateral relations and strategic cooperation. “Is there anything better than being the U.S. ambassador to Greece? The experience is already exceptional, and I look forward to creating new memories and achieving new goals,” she said.
