Local Labor MP for Cooper, Ged Kearney, has reaffirmed her commitment to the multicultural communities of Melbourne’s inner north, announcing that a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will deliver $20,000 to upgrade the Northcote and Reservoir senior citizens centres.
Both centres are regularly used by the Greek Ex-Servicemen’s Elderly Citizens Club of Darebin and Districts, as well as other local multicultural community groups.
Under the funding pledge, $10,000 will go toward refurbishing the kitchen and upgrading the sound system at the Northcote Senior Citizens Centre. The improvements will enhance the centre’s functionality for community events, meetings and cultural functions.
An additional $10,000 will be directed to the Reservoir Senior Citizens Centre to upgrade essential amenities. Planned improvements include new tables and chairs, the installation of a reverse-cycle air conditioner, and a new noticeboard—all aimed at making the space more accessible and welcoming for diverse community use.
“These centres are vital gathering places for multicultural communities in Cooper,” Ms Kearney said. “These upgrades will ensure they remain vibrant, inclusive and comfortable spaces for everyone—particularly our valued Greek senior citizens.”
As with all federal commitments, the projects will be delivered in accordance with the Commonwealth Grants Rules and Guidelines.
“I’ve listened closely to local community feedback,” Ms Kearney added. “This investment recognises the contribution of our multicultural groups and ensures they have the facilities they deserve.”
