Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday in Ramallah, ahead of his visit to Jerusalem and participation in the Greece–Cyprus–Israel trilateral summit.
Support for the Palestinian Authority and humanitarian aid
Mitsotakis reiterated Greece’s support for the Palestinian Authority as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. This marks the first visit of a Greek Prime Minister to Ramallah since 2015 and the first by a European leader since the first phase of the Gaza Peace Plan began.
Greece contributes actively to humanitarian efforts in Gaza, providing aid, financial support, and medical care for children affected by the conflict, emphasizing the protection of civilians and respect for international humanitarian law.
Dialogue, reforms, and a two-state solution
The Prime Minister stressed that Greece, as an EU member and UN Security Council participant, supports restarting the political process towards a two-state solution. He also highlighted the importance of reforms implemented by the Palestinian Authority, which strengthen operational capacity and build mutual trust.
Abbas: appreciation for Greece’s role
Mahmoud Abbas expressed gratitude to Greece for supporting Palestinian rights and advancing the pursuit of lasting peace. He called for acceleration of the Peace Plan, a long-term ceasefire, humanitarian aid, and reconstruction in Gaza, while urging pressure on Israel to uphold the two-state solution.
Significance of the visit
The visit reinforces Greece’s role as a reliable and trusted mediator in the Middle East. It reaffirms the country’s longstanding position supporting a political settlement and the two-state solution, while expressing readiness to contribute to Gaza’s post-conflict recovery and regional security.
