A large wildfire continues to burn in the Oropos region of Attica, with two active fronts threatening local communities. One front is advancing toward Asprochori and the other toward Sykamino, where the situation is currently more critical due to the fire consuming dense forest.
Asprochori saw an improved situation overnight as winds subsided, creating calmer conditions that allowed firefighting crews to gain control. The flames came dangerously close to homes, but a timely evacuation prevented further damage.
Fire Brigade spokesperson, Fire Colonel Vasilis Vathrakogiannis, stated that the drop in wind intensity played a decisive role in controlling the fire. While conditions have improved, firefighting forces remain fully mobilized to extinguish the blaze entirely by morning. No damage to homes has been reported so far.
Currently, 210 firefighters, 11 elite forest units (EMODE), 51 vehicles, numerous volunteers, water trucks, and heavy machinery from the Armed Forces and the Attica Region are involved. The Mobile Operations Center “Olympus” is coordinating all efforts on the ground.
Oropos Mayor Giorgos Yassimakis confirmed that two major fire fronts remain active, north and south of Asprochori. He noted that all residents had been safely evacuated by Wednesday evening and expressed hope that containment efforts would soon yield results.
Civil Protection authorities also dismissed rumors that the Malakasa migrant facility was being evacuated. Although all preparations have been made, evacuation has not been deemed necessary at this stage.
The main threat now lies in wind direction. If winds shift northward, the fire could move toward Mount Parnitha, an area previously affected by wildfires. A 112 emergency alert urged residents to remain vigilant and follow official instructions.
