Greece Impresses in 2027 World Cup Qualifier Opener vs Romania, launching its FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifying campaign with a statement 91–64 victory at Thessaloniki’s legendary Nick Galis Hall.

The Greek men’s national basketball team dominated from start to finish on Thursday night, overwhelming Romania with relentless defence, accurate shooting and strong teamwork — a performance that sets the tone for a promising qualifying journey ahead.

Early control and a dominating start

From tip-off Greece seized control, surging to a 15–4 lead within the first few minutes, thanks to early scoring from Giannoulis Larentzakis and Alexandros Samodurov. By quarter-time Greece led 26–12 — a gap they would never relinquish.

Newcomer Nikos Persides made a memorable debut, finishing with 17 points on perfect shooting. Larentzakis led the team with 18 points, including four triples. Samodurov added 16 points and seven rebounds, while rookie Elijah Mitrou‑Long impressed with 13 points, six assists and four boards.

Romania’s best effort came from Mihai Maciucea, who put up 13 points and six rebounds — the only Romanian in double digits.

Sharpshooting and pace overwhelm opposition

Greece’s long-range shooting proved decisive. The blue-and-white knocked down 13 of 30 three-point attempts (~ 43 %), opening the game wide. A buzzer-beating triple from Vangelis Bagoris extended the lead early in the second quarter, forcing a Romanian timeout that did little to stem the tide.

Romania had a brief response with an 8–0 run narrowing the gap to 29–20, but Greece answered immediately with a 16–6 run to restore a commanding 45–26 lead by the 19th minute.

Greece never looked back. In the third quarter another series of successful threes — by Larentzakis, Mitrou-Long and Samodurov — pushed the margin past 30 points (66–36), and the rest of the match played out as a comfortable rout.

A confident march toward the next round

With the 91–64 win, Greece made a forceful statement in their first qualifier. The national team now prepares for its second qualifier on Sunday 30 November, when they face Portugal national basketball team away — a matchup that could strengthen their path toward qualification.

Broader Significance

This dominant victory reaffirms Greece’s resurgence after a strong performance at EuroBasket 2025, where the national team returned to the podium after a long medal drought.

With such a convincing start — blending experienced scorers and promising newcomers — fans and analysts alike see Greece as a serious contender in European basketball. If they maintain this form, expectations are high for a deep run in the 2027 World Cup qualifiers and a return to top-tier international competition.
