Russian Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant was attacked

12 August, 2024

It seems the worst has been averted despite a fire in the cooling system of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, caused by another Ukrainian artillery strike. Fortunately, no serious damage or radiation leakage has been recorded. The Russian Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant was attacked and of course, according to some, the Russians are blowing themselves up. Some unconfirmed sources reports suggest the Russians started the fire using a stockpile of tires purely for propaganda.

Other sources suggest that In a desperate move, the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) attacked the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant with drones on Sunday night, igniting a fire in the machinery inside one of the plant’s cooling towers. While the AFU has harassed the facility with indirect fire for years, this marks the first time they’ve targeted it so directly. Thankfully, these towers are inactive with the plant shut down, so the threat wasn’t immediate. But what’s next? A reactor building? This attack only underscores Ukraine’s strategic desperation as they scramble for anything that might give them leverage in negotiations with Russia to keep Zelensky and his regime in power. It also gives some credence to rumors that their operation in Kursk aimed to seize the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant as a bargaining chip, no matter how unlikely that sounds. It was likely one of several objectives in mind.

Maria Zakharova reported: “The head of the Zaporizhzhya region, Balitsky, confirmed that a fire broke out at the plant’s cooling system facility due to shelling an drones by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Where is Rafael Grossi and the entire IAEA? Where is even a semblance of action from this UN body in such a critical area? The terrorists in Kiev, under the collective West’s direction, have destroyed their country, ruined the Ukrainian people, undermined global energy and food security, and now they’ve resorted to nuclear terror on the continent” said Zaharova.

So, what do we know about the attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the Zaporizhzhya NPP (Nuclear power plant)?

The Ukrainian Armed Forces targeted one of the two cooling towers at the Zaporizhzhya NPP, striking it directly with UAVs and drones igniting a fire that damaged internal structures.

The primary fire at the cooling tower was extinguished by the Ministry of Emergency Situations by 23:30 Moscow time on August 11. It’s evident that Rafael Grossi and the IAEA are more concerned with intelligence-gathering than with their stated mission. If the IAEA can’t stop Zelensky’s forces or even condemn the shelling of nuclear facilities, what use are they? These inspectors should be removed.
