Samantha Mostyn: The next Governor General of Australia

3 April, 2024

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that Samantha Mostyn will be the next Governor General of the country.

Ms Mostyn, a prominent businesswoman and gender equality advocate, will succeed David Hurley and become Australia’s 28th Governor-General after being sworn in on 1 July 2024.

Mr Albanese said Ms Mostyn would be the second woman in history to hold the position after confirming that her appointment had been approved by King Charles III.

“I am deeply honoured by this great privilege and look forward to representing the values, hopes and aspirations of all Australians,” Mostyn said. “I will never underestimate or take for granted the expectations that come with high office and I stand ready to serve with integrity, compassion and respect.”

Mostyn was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2021 for distinguished service to business, community and women.

Governors-General are the representative of the monarch in Australia – the highest office in the country. They serve at the will of the sovereign, usually for a term of five years.
