Ukraine thriller continues – Trump: “In two weeks we’ll know if peace is possible”

22 August, 2025

The war in Ukraine, now over three and a half years ongoing, remains at a critical juncture.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump continues diplomatic efforts to arrange a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an attempt to achieve peace, though significant obstacles persist.

Tonight, Trump stated in a radio interview that he expects to know more about the chances of reaching peace “within the next two weeks.” He also warned that if progress is not achieved, “we may need to adopt a different approach.” This initiative follows his recent meetings first with Putin in Alaska and then with Zelensky in Washington, and he plans a direct meeting between the two leaders followed by a trilateral discussion including himself.

Zelensky, meanwhile, has been highly critical of Moscow, accusing Russian leadership of avoiding meaningful negotiations. In his nightly address, he described Moscow’s signals as “inappropriate” and cited Russia’s massive attack with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles as evidence of evasion of substantive talks.

The Kremlin has outlined strict conditions for peace: ceding the entire eastern Donbas region, renouncing Ukraine’s NATO membership aspirations, and maintaining the country’s neutrality with no Western military presence. Kyiv has firmly rejected any territorial concessions, reiterating that NATO membership is a strategic goal enshrined in its constitution.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Putin is ready to meet Zelensky, but insisted that all issues must be resolved beforehand. The international community, particularly the U.S., U.K., France, and Germany, watches these developments with skepticism, considering Kremlin demands politically and strategically impossible for Kyiv to accept.

The situation remains uncertain, with diplomatic efforts unfolding amid ongoing bombardments and military actions across Ukraine, leaving the international community anxious about the region’s future.
