US government shutdown ends after historic 43 days: Trump signs funding bill

13 November, 2025

On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law the funding bill that officially ended the historic 43-day federal government shutdown, the longest in American history.

The signing took place in the Resolute Desk of the Oval Office at the White House, in a rare move where the president did not take questions from reporters.

During the signing, Trump sharply criticized Congressional Democrats, claiming they attempted to extort American taxpayers for “hundreds of billions of dollars” related to illegal immigration. “Today, we’re sending a clear message that we will NEVER give in to extortion,” he said. He also blamed Democrats for the government closure, estimating the shutdown’s cost at $1.5 trillion.

The shutdown ended hours after the House of Representatives approved the funding package by 222 votes to 209. Six Democrats joined Republicans in support, while two Republicans voted against it. The Senate had previously approved the measure, clearing the way for the reopening of federal services halted since October 1.

The funding bill ensures most federal agencies operate until January 30, 2026, provides full funding for the US Department of Agriculture, military infrastructure projects, and Congress itself. It also guarantees retroactive pay for approximately 1.2 million federal workers affected by the shutdown.

Despite the reopening, key issues remain unresolved, particularly tax credits under the Affordable Care Act, as the Senate has postponed a vote until mid-December. Analysts warn this delay could trigger renewed tensions in early 2026 when temporary funding expires.

The signing coincided with the release of thousands of documents from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate, which mentioned Trump, although no charges were filed and the president denies any involvement. Trump emphasized that funds for healthcare should go directly to citizens rather than through federal subsidies.
